when i was in sibu the other day, i had my first chance of eating dien mien ngu, a local popular foochow dish. the reason of not having it for the last 17 years was because my parents love it. my parents also love beef noodles which i do not and i assume because dien mien ngu is their favourite dish, i will not love the taste of it.
i went with mum and ordered two bowls - 1 special and the other non. what is the difference? the special one contained small octopus and costs rm2.60. the non costs rm2. i had the ordinary one coz i don't eat octopus (yes, i am a very choosy person). it tasted good, there's nothing 'beefy' about it. mum said it was made of flour grained from rice. the fish bowls were springy. the person who served us is the owner, added mum again and he is the second generation. dad commented before this is the best place to have authentic dien mien ngu. you can find similar dish near civic centre or bus terminal in jalan pahlawan but the taste are different.
with the ambience of the same old place where thousands of sibuans had their first taste of dien mien ngu, i will agree with dad.
