dien mien ngu

when i was in sibu the other day, i had my first chance of eating dien mien ngu, a local popular foochow dish. the reason of not having it for the last 17 years was because my parents love it. my parents also love beef noodles which i do not and i assume because dien mien ngu is their favourite dish, i will not love the taste of it.

i went with mum and ordered two bowls - 1 special and the other non. what is the difference? the special one contained small octopus and costs rm2.60. the non costs rm2. i had the ordinary one coz i don't eat octopus (yes, i am a very choosy person). it tasted good, there's nothing 'beefy' about it. mum said it was made of flour grained from rice. the fish bowls were springy. the person who served us is the owner, added mum again and he is the second generation. dad commented before this is the best place to have authentic dien mien ngu. you can find similar dish near civic centre or bus terminal in jalan pahlawan but the taste are different.

with the ambience of the same old place where thousands of sibuans had their first taste of dien mien ngu, i will agree with dad.

has mr. bean changed his job?

this shop is located besides the sibu bus terminal at jalan pahlawan. i didn't drop in case mr bean played some pranks on me.

my alma mater - st.elizabeth's school, sibu

i recently went back to my former secondary school - smk (formerly smb) st.elizabeth. i was curious about the official opening of the 7 million lau cheng kiong hall by the prime minister.

i thought the opening ceremony would be in the morning but the guard said it would be at 2pm. as it turned out, it started only at 4.30pm as the launching ceremony of sarawak score earlier in bintulu hadn't finish yet.

took some pictures from inside the car. the school has changed a lot, i must say.

i think the only buildings left from my time would be the two buildings with red roof and the toilet!

picture taken from an old exercise book

but the attire of the students were still the same. not that i expect any change in the old, blue white pinafore. i mean the girls still tie their hair up with red ribbons.

from my car, i could hear students practising the school song. i couldn't help but sang part of the song along albeit i forgot some of the words. i managed to find an old, yellowish exercise book and there was the song lyrics on the back cover. Click on the picture to read the lyrics.

ses, wish you the best in every endeavour!

happy chinese new year!

have been in sibu for the past 6 days. arrived in sibu on thursday night to be exact.

sibu is still sibu. not much difference except new buildings here and there.

last minute shopping in sibu is really like a hell! with the coming celebration, there is an influx of cars from outstation and this make the jam worse!

but of course, there is no place like home and i am truly glad to be here, to be able to celebrate the new year with family and friends.

happy chinese new year! may the year of the rat brings good health and blessings!

dinner

went for a dinner with my family yesterday at the famous seafood shop nearby sibu bus terminal. the shop is famous for its signature dishes - roasted pork rib and crab. however, we ordered the pork rib only as the we were too lazy to crack the crab's tough shell to reach the meat inside.

we only had to wait for about 10 minutes for the dishes to be served.

the salad chicken dish

'ma li' vegetable

seafood(hai sien)soup

prawn dish

the famous roasted pork rib

all costs rm63 including drinks and 4 bowls of rice. pretty cheap. the pork rib is excellent. just dip your portion in the sause which accompanied the dish, it would simply taste heavenly. would strongly recommend it to anyone.

in sibu

i finally reached sibu at 8pm yesterday via airasia. i checked in through the web, reached lcct at 5.15pm for my 6.15pm flight. checking in the web is so convenient. you don't have to rush to beat the time or line up like lining up to have a turn in the w.c. anyway, while in the waiting hall, listening to the foochow dialect around me made me feel so much at home. ahaha..

sibu is sibu. there is no other place like sibu. and boy, am i glad to be here now.

sunday

i recently bought several dvds at my favourite store in kin orient. the price is rm6/piece which is a very good bargain. there is also a wide variety of selection both new and old. due to the recent oscar bug, i bought nominated movies e.g. queen, babel and letters from iwo jima to add to my collection of oscar movies. i did not buy dream girls or pursuit of happiness because they will be shown in cinema soon. tried to look for the departed and miss little sunshine but they are not available. actually i've watched the departed when it was released and it was an excellent movie. gruesome but exciting. it had been a while since i last saw a movie that gross. but did not mind watching it again because as i mentioned, it is a very good movie. the departed is based on a hong kong movie, an internal affair. since then, there are many hongkong movies and dramas plotted similarly; police and the mob competing to find the 'mole' among them.

i also bought borat: cultural learnings of america for make benefit glorious nation of kazakhstan. i have watched a bit and it is absolutely humorous. bought it coz i know there is no chance it will be shown here in malaysia due to the tight censorship with its elements of anti-semitism, sex and politic.

today marks my second last day in sibu. bought my favourite all time snacks - lee fah mee to bring to kl. i am sure all sarawakians are pretty familiar with it. it is like mamee but it has much better taste. it is not available anywhere in kl so that's why i bought a box of it! very yummy and tasty to eat while reading or watching tv.

2-1/2 days more to go

i have 2.5 days more to spend in sibu. absolutely not happy about how time flies when you least expect it to. i'm gonna miss sibu always even though my life is virtually meaningless when i worked here.

the mAtter began to haunt me again yesterday when i made a visit to my uncle. i always felt uncomfortable whenever it was brought up. i tried to act natural, trying to avoid from bursting out my feelings which i kept down deep inside. i know it is hopeless because nobody will agree with me as the fact will remain unchanged, and cannot be changed forever.

also made a visit to my cousin's house. his house is almost a mirror of what i would like my own future house to look like. the deco is simple, yet elegant and pleasing.

visited dad's friend too. i used to have hots for his son (maybe still now) but i don't stand a chance coz he's going to marry soon. too bad. :(

packed my luggage too. try to keep it to the minimum so that my hand will not become too sore from carrying it.
